Introduction

General information

      The MetadataEditor is a program for viewing and editing image metadata. All most popular image formats are supported, and namely: JPEG, BMP, TIFF, PNG, GIF etc. For viewing ALL metadata saved in the image file are available such as EXIF, AUXEXIF, TIFF, GIF, IPTC etc. The most of them are available for editing, including   deletion and adding new ones. It allows to view metadata from both the computer's hard disc as well as directly from the Internet without intermediate copying to the hard disc.

    The program uses the operating system tools for metadata access and editing, thus exiftools are not used. EXIF 2.3 standard is supported completely.

      The program will be also useful for metadata-applying software developers. For the most of metadata tags presented in EXIF 2.3 standard tag and data type description is provided, and for the NSDictionary type a list of key - object pairs is provided. Pop-up helps over the tag name will help to define a data type, which description is not available.

       Main functions.

       Add, delete and batch edit metadata .

       Geolocation - add GPS coordinates using the map.

          Important! For the GPS metadata group the capability of metadata editing while using a map is provided. While initial activating of the map window a request for permit  to determine your geoposition can be probably made.

          THE METADATA EDITOR PROGRAM DOES NOT USE THE USER'S GEOPOSITION DATA EVEN IF THE USER GAVE EARLIER THE PERMIT FOR USAGE THEREOF.

           Metadata types and kinds

           Metadata types are as follows:

           - String data;

           - Numerical data: integer data and data with floating point;

           - Date/time;

           - Arrays with a variable length;

           - Arrays with a fixed length;

           - Dictionaries with a fixed value of the "key - object" pair;

           - Dictionaries with a fixed "key" value and a variable "object" value.

           Note: The "key - value" is a more proper term, but in Xcode the "key - object" term is accepted.

           Metadata kinds are as follows:

           - Editable metadata;

           - Metadata only for reading. But "only-read" doesn't mean in every case that metadata can't be edited. For example,   CopyrightNotice of the IPTC group can't be edited. But if you change the Copyright value of the TIFF group, then CopyrightNotice will change as well. And such examples are quite numerous.

            Currently there is a lot of metadata not included in EXIF 2.3 standard. Each producer of photo and video equipment develops their own metadata describing, for example, peculiar features of their products. Therefore, this program doesn't support all existing metadata as regards the editing capability, but it allows to view them.

            Thus, a new unstandardized metadata type appears. The "unstandardized" term doesn't mean that all metadata not included in EXIF 2.3 standard can't be edited. The program author fulfilled a large portion of work on introducing unstandardized metadata in the software product database that allowed to make them editable.
